165) DR NO(1962) 16Aug- I'm not really a big James Bond fan. I could never get into the movies. But Dr No was on my list of recomended movies on Netflix, so I thought I'd give it another try. Its a good movie. For anyone whos not aware, Dr No is the first James Bond movie, so all the set-up for the rest of thie films is their. Bond's attitude and style, his famous lines, his crazy villans and his Bond girl. The movie is definately entertaining, but I don;t know if I'm sold enough to watch all the rest. Neat piece of trivia though, is this: When the time came to translate the movie for foreign markets, someone misread the film's title and thought it was DR? NO. Like a question and answer. So the literal translation in some countries, like Japan is "We do not need a Doctor"

166) THE BIG SLEEP(1978) 16Aug- Lately I've been big into Philip Marlowe. I've been reading all the Raymond Chandler novels, and I've been looking for all the movie adaptations as well. The first one I saw was Bogart & Bacall's version of the Big Sleep. Its an awesome movie. I also saw the Elliot Gould version of The Long Goodbye. I thought it was pretty good. This movie however, just doesn't keep up, which is a shame since its got American man's man Robert Mitchum and English man's man Oliver Reed. Unfortunaetly they don't save the movie at all. First off its got the look of an 80's TV drama like Dynasty or Dallas. Secondly all the other acting isn't very good. Two of the main characters are these two spoiled rich girls, who in the book are bratty and a bit wild. Here they are just goofy. Making a silly face and sticking out your tounge doen't translate into what the characters are supposed to be. Plus the women were pretty much butt-ugly. They're supposed to be sex kittens, but theres just no way. You cannot believe that Marlowe would fall for the older sister, or that the second one is attractive enough to pose for porno mags(which is basically the plot. She's being blackmailed and someone is murdered). So with all that going against it, I'm afraid to say I was quite disappoited with this movie.
